Skywalk, Bernkastel-Kues

Remote, yet connected:
lighting scenarios can be controlled online, thanks to the supplied Internet connection

The Skywalk on the plateau of Bernkastel-Kues offers breathtaking views of the town, vineyards and the River Moselle. Winegrowing – predominantly on steep slopes – has historically been the most important industry for the town on the Middle Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany).

Situated between forests and vineyards, the Skywalk was created during an elaborate overhaul of the spa gardens. How could remotely controllable lighting scenarios be organised for a structure that is so visible from afar, and yet relatively far away from any infrastructural resources?

Our Architectural Lighting Management System BEGA Connect with the BEGA Air Connector solves the problem and serves as a convenient hub for use with independent online access via narrowband IoT. Simply switch it on – and the lighting installation on the hilltop goes online without a local Internet connection. No additional work was necessary – just a few steps were all it took.

To fulfil the various lighting requirements, three different types of luminaire are controlled via BEGA Connect in Bernkastel-Kues.

High-performance floodlights are used on the Skywalk to illuminate the outer areas of the structure. The RGBW luminaires allow the architecture to be highlighted in different colours, which draw even more attention to its remarkable look. For the changing coloured light effects via DALI, the BEGA Connect App controls each individual colour channel granularly. Meanwhile, performance floodlights illuminate the inner walls and inner roof surfaces.

Recessed wall luminaires on the walkway light up the path in unfavourable lighting conditions.

The creative lighting scenarios and safety lighting for the walkways of the Skywalk are controlled and monitored together online – using nothing but an Air Connector. This controls the DALI operating devices of the RGBW luminaires for the multicoloured lighting and the path luminaires.

All the system components and lighting scenarios can be accessed at any time without needing to be present on site.
