Westfalenbad, Hagen

Convertible leisure facility

The Westfalenbad in Hagen has a total area of around 8,000 square metres, making it one of the biggest aquatics centres of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state. The state-of-the-art leisure facility features more than 2,000 square metres of water surface – part of which with a convertible roof that can be opened or closed in as little as eight minutes.

Westfalenbad is divided into three areas: the training pool, the leisure area and the sauna and spa area, which comprises five saunas situated in gardens with a pond as well as three indoor saunas and various relaxation rooms.

Visitors to the 30 million euro facility get to enjoy the spacious design as soon as they set foot in the entrance area. In-ground luminaires with skid-blocking glass by BEGA provide for clear direction on all access ways. The leisure facility’s forecourt is bordered by unshielded light building elements that create a clear visual structure both during the day and after dark. The streamlined entrance area with its distinctive orange frame interacts perfectly with the linear light building elements.

The architecture of the entire site is characterised by clear lines and bold contrasts. Unshielded BEGA wall luminaires are used to set creative design highlights across the entire aquatic centre. Thanks to their impact-resistant properties, the wall luminaires are ideal for public areas. Extremely robust frames made of die-cast aluminium protect the edges and corners of the crystal glass with its high material strength and precise light-diffusing structures.

Subtle lighting makes for a pleasant atmosphere in the sauna area’s generous gardens. Shielded bollards with wide beam light distribution are installed along the pathways. Compact in-ground luminaires were used as discreet yet efficient lighting tools that border the pathways and the relaxation patio.

Luminaires with particularly high protection classes are needed for the wet areas. These are also distinguished by their long maintenance intervals. BEGA recessed ceiling luminaires with shallow installation depth are an ideal match for this type of requirements. Their LED modules feature a minimum service life of 50,000 hours.
